How metas start, peak and rotate

Every meta follows a rough life: a spark, a leader, a flood of copies, exhaustion, and money moving on to the next thing.

  1. The five stages
  2. Three kinds of rotation
  3. Quiz

From far away, metas look random. Up close, they follow a pattern you will see again and again. Knowing the stages will not tell you exactly when to buy or sell, but it tells you roughly where you are standing.

The five stages

  1. Spark. Something happens: a viral video, a famous post, a news story, a new chain or launchpad. The first coins appear within minutes.
  2. Leader. One coin pulls ahead. It gets the most holders, the most posts and usually the first big chart.
  3. Betas and copies. Traders hunt for the next one on the same theme. Dozens or hundreds of similar coins launch. Some betas run hard for a few hours.
  4. Exhaustion. New copies stop running. The leader fails to make a new high. Early holders sell into the late buyers.
  5. Rotation. Attention and money move to a different story, chain or launchpad. The old meta's coins drift down, many of them close to zero.
The life of a memecoinA flow from top to bottom. Launch: a new coin is created. Bonding curve: buys push the price up. Most coins die here and never fill the curve. Graduation: the curve sells out. Pool: anyone can trade it, like any other coin. Then one of two endings: a runner, where buyers keep coming and the price holds or grows, or dead, where buyers leave and the price bleeds out.LaunchA new coin is createdBonding curveBuys push the price upMost die hereThey never fillthe curveGraduationThe curve sells outPoolAnyone can trade itRunnerBuyers keep coming, price holds or growsDeadBuyers leave, price bleeds out
One coin's path, from launch to a runner or a dead coin. A whole meta moves the same way: many start, a few break through, and most fade.

Three kinds of rotation

Money rotates between stories, say from dogs to cats or from cats to AI bots. It also rotates between launchpads and between whole blockchains. Traders follow wherever new coins are running, and they leave just as quickly.

LaunchpadSolana launches moved from pump.fun to LetsBONKJuly 2025On July 6 LetsBONK passed pump.fun in daily launches for the first time, and for a while in trading volume too. Its biggest coin, USELESS, passed $260 million. Over the next year, most new Solana coins started on pump.fun again.
ChainTraders piled into BNB ChainOctober 2025A week of frenzy, then a crash. See the example below.
ChainA brand-new chain, Robinhood Chain, launched on July 1July 2026Its first headline memecoin, CASHCAT, reached about $100 million on July 8. In early October the chain's daily transactions were about 42% below a mid-September level.

Example

BNB meme season, October 2025

A chain rotation from spark to crash in about a week.

  1. Step 1: October 4, 2025: a coin with a Chinese name meaning Binance Life launches on Four.Meme, a launchpad on BNB Chain.
  2. Step 2: Within hours one Binance co-founder replies using the phrase, and the next day the other posts it too. By October 6 the coin is worth about $50 million.
  3. Step 3: October 7: Binance's founder posts '#BNB meme szn!'. A flood of new coins launches on the chain. At the peak, more than 100,000 on-chain traders had bought new BNB memecoins, and about 70% of them were showing a profit at that moment.
  4. Step 4: October 8: Binance Life hits an all-time high of about $524 million, two days after it passed $50 million.
  5. Step 5: As the frenzy peaked, the founder said his tweets are 'not endorsements'. Within 24 hours many of the new coins had lost 60% to 95% of their value.
  6. Step 6: The people who did well were mostly early and sold into the excitement. Anyone who arrived late was buying from them.

Rotation is also why holding a dead memecoin until the meta comes back rarely works. Old themes do return sometimes, but the money usually goes into new coins on that theme, not back into last season's bags.

This guide is for learning. It is not financial advice. Most memecoins go to zero and most people who trade them lose money. Only ever trade what you can afford to lose.
