What a narrative and a meta are
A narrative is the story that makes people care about a coin. The meta is whichever story is winning right now.

A memecoin has no product, no profits and no office you can call. So why does one coin go from nothing to $100 million while thousands of others die on the same day? Most of the answer is a story. Traders call that story the narrative.
The narrative is the story
A narrative is the reason people care about a coin. It might be an animal everyone saw on TikTok this week, a joke from a famous account on X, a political event, or an AI bot that seems to have a mind of its own. The coin itself is only a name, a picture and a contract address. The story is what makes a stranger want to own it.
A strong narrative is easy to explain in one sentence, easy to share as a picture, and already spreading outside crypto. 'The baby hippo from the zoo videos' passes that test. 'A token for decentralized pet insurance' does not.
The meta is the story that is winning now
The meta is the narrative, or style of coin, that is pulling in most of the money and attention right now. If cat coins keep running for two weeks, people say cats are the meta. If coins tied to AI bots keep running, AI agents are the meta. The word comes from gaming, where the meta is the strategy most players are using this season.
Metas do not last. Some stay hot for a few weeks. Some burn out in two days. Spotting when one is starting, and when it is tired, is a big part of trading memecoins by hand.

Leaders and betas
Inside a meta there is usually one leader: the first coin that ran, or the one with the most holders and the biggest market cap. Around it, traders buy betas: smaller coins on the same theme that they hope will copy the leader's move.
When the leader climbs, betas often jump harder, because a little money moves a small coin a lot. When the leader falls, betas usually fall harder and faster, for the same reason in reverse. There was never much money holding them up.
You will also hear the word mindshare: how much of the attention on X, TikTok and Telegram one coin or theme holds. Price tends to follow mindshare, and mindshare moves fast.
The AI agent meta, October 2024
In October 2024 an AI chatbot account on X called Truth Terminal started a new meta almost by accident. Here is how it unfolded.
- Step 1: October 10, 2024: someone launches a coin called GOAT on pump.fun, named after a phrase the bot had been posting. Other accounts tag the bot on X, and later that day it posts that it endorses the coin.
- Step 2: October 18: a wallet linked to the bot is reported to hold GOAT worth over $1 million. The story that an AI became a millionaire spreads far outside crypto.
- Step 3: October 23: GOAT's market cap is reported at about $611 million, less than two weeks after launch.
- Step 4: November 17: GOAT peaks at about $1.36 a token. With about 1 billion tokens in existence, that is a market cap of roughly $1.36 billion.
- Step 5: Over those weeks, a flood of other 'AI agent' coins launches. A few run hard. Most fade within hours or days. That flood of copies is what a meta looks like from the inside.
- Step 6: In late October 2026, GOAT's market cap is around $14 million, about 99% below its peak.
In the next lessons you will see how metas start and rotate, where the stories come from, how coins get relaunched or taken over, and why timing matters more than almost anything else.

This guide is for learning. It is not financial advice. Most memecoins go to zero and most people who trade them lose money. Only ever trade what you can afford to lose.
