Copy trading and following KOLs
How copy trading and wallet trackers work, why the copier is always late, and how to use other traders as ideas instead of orders.
On this page
A KOL, short for key opinion leader, is a trader or influencer with a big following, mostly on X and Telegram. Smart money is the trenches' name for wallets with a strong record. Copy trading means a bot watches one of those wallets and buys when it buys.
The tools are everywhere. GMGN lets you follow smart money and KOL wallets and see their trades as they happen. Axiom has a wallet tracker that shows what the wallets you add are buying in real time. Kolscan ranks KOL wallets by profit on a public leaderboard, and pump.fun bought it in July 2025. Many Telegram trading bots offer copy trading too.
Why the copier is always late
A copy can't be instant. The wallet you follow buys. Its trade lands on the chain. Your bot sees it, builds a trade and sends it. By then every other copier has seen the same thing. On a small coin all those buys push the price up, so you buy near the top of the wave the original wallet started.
Forty copiers on one wallet (made-up numbers)
A well-known wallet buys a fresh coin at a $30k market cap.
- Step 1: In the next few seconds forty copy bots and a crowd of alert-watchers buy too. The market cap jumps to $60k.
- Step 2: Your copy fills at about $55k, because the price moved while your trade was on its way.
- Step 3: The wallet you copied sells into that wave at $60k. That is 2x for them.
- Step 4: Their sell and the copiers rushing out drag the price to $35k. They doubled. You are down about 36% before fees.
Nobody in that story had to break a rule. The wallet bought early and sold into demand. The copiers were the demand. That is what being exit liquidity means.
What a leaderboard doesn't show
- Other wallets. A KOL's public wallet can be one of several. You see the part they let you see.
- Paid posts. Some calls are paid promotions, and not every one says so.
- Their plan. They might sell 10% to take profit while your bot copies a full exit, or the other way round.
- The future. A wallet ranked first this month was ranked on trades that are already over. Hot streaks end.
- The traps. A 2026 study presented at the ACM Web Conference describes manipulative bots in memecoin copy trading that front-run copiers, hide their positions and fake hype. A famous wallet with many copiers is a target in itself.

How to use other traders well
- Treat a call or a copied buy as an idea, not an order. Check the coin yourself before you buy.
- Watch a wallet for weeks, ideally on paper money, before you trust it with real SOL.
- Use your own size and your own exits. Their stop is not your stop.
- Prefer wallets that buy and hold for a while over wallets that flip in seconds. You can't copy speed.
- Drop anyone you catch shilling a coin for pay without saying so.

This guide is for learning. It is not financial advice. Most memecoins go to zero and most people who trade them lose money. Only ever trade what you can afford to lose.
