A row of small helmeted traders with lanterns peer out of a trench at a huge glowing price line that zigzags up to a peak and then crashes; some cheer, one holds their head and one sleeps.
The trenches: crowded, loud, and open all night.

'The trenches' is what traders call the newest, fastest and riskiest corner of the memecoin world: coins that are minutes or hours old, mostly on Solana launchpads like pump.fun. People who spend their days there call themselves trenchers or degens, and they say it with pride.

The name is a war metaphor, and it fits: it's loud, it's crowded, and most people leave with less than they brought. People also use it for the group chats where these coins get passed around, and for the early, high-risk stage of any coin.

Where it happens

  • Launchpads, where coins are born. Pump.fun is the biggest on Solana.
  • Trading terminals and Telegram bots, where people buy and sell in one click.
  • X, often called Crypto Twitter or CT, where memes, calls and drama spread.
  • Telegram and Discord groups, where callers post coins to their followers.
  • Livestreams, where some devs stream themselves while their coin trades.

Solana is the home of the trenches. Other chains, like BNB Chain and the newer Robinhood Chain, compete for the action, but in 2026 most memecoin trading still happens on Solana.

Who you will meet

WhoWhat they do
DevLaunches the coin. Sometimes builds a community, sometimes sells everything within minutes.
SniperUses a bot to buy in the very first second, then sells to people who arrive later.
BundlerBuys a big share of a new coin from many wallets at once, so it looks like many separate buyers.
KOL (key opinion leader) or callerPosts coins to a big following. Some are honest, some are paid, some sell to their own followers.
WhaleHolds enough to move the price alone.
Diamond or paper handsHolds through everything, or sells at the first scare.

How fast it moves

Bitquery, a blockchain data company, sampled new pump.fun coins on six launch days between August and early October 2026. About half of them got an outside buy within roughly 1.3 seconds of launch. No human clicks that fast. When you see a brand-new coin, assume bots got there before you.

Example

One meme, five coins

A made-up morning, but a very typical one.

  1. Step 1: 9:00. A video of a dog in a tiny raincoat goes viral.
  2. Step 2: 9:01. Three coins called $RAINDOG launch on pump.fun. By 9:05 there are five.
  3. Step 3: 9:10. One of them reaches a $60,000 market cap. The other four sit between $5,000 and $8,000.
  4. Step 4: 9:30. A big account posts one of them and it runs to $400,000. Three of the other four are already dead.
  5. Step 5: Same name, same ticker, five different coins. Only the contract address tells them apart, and the crowd usually picks just one.

The unwritten rules

  • 'NFA, DYOR': not financial advice, do your own research. Everyone says it. It means you are on your own.
  • 'If you can't see who the exit liquidity is, it's you.' Someone has to buy what the early holders sell.
  • 'Don't marry your bags.' A coin is not your friend.
  • 'Nobody went broke taking profits.' Selling some on the way up is how people stay in the game.
A shadowy figure hides behind a giant phone full of chat bubbles and dangles a gold coin on a fishing hook from the newest message; the explorer steps back with a hand raised.

This guide is for learning. It is not financial advice. Most memecoins go to zero and most people who trade them lose money. Only ever trade what you can afford to lose.
